Loud Snoring Is a Wake-Up Call to Lose Weight
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by loud snoring followed by periods in which breathing actually stops for 10 seconds or longer. Among the hundreds of studies done on sleep apnea there is a clear correlation between excess weight and the severity of sleep apnea.
Generalized fatigue can be an indicator that the problem exists and testing at a sleep clinic can confirm these suspicions. When breathing stops, oxygen levels decline and the individual awakens gasping for air. These repeated sleep disturbances make for a restless, inadequate night’s sleep resulting in daytime fatigue, but it also puts a strain on the heart that can also lead to high blood pressure.
Weight changes can significantly affect the incidence of this sleep problem. A recent study tracked nearly 700 men and women over a four-year period to determine the affects of weight gain or loss on sleep apnea. While a 10% gain in weight was associated with a 32 percent increase in the apnea index, the good news was that a 10% weight loss predicted a 26% decrease in the apnea index according to this University of Wisconsin study.1
Another study followed 281 men over the course of 30 years and found that as the BMI (body mass index) and waist circumference increased the severity of sleep-disordered breathing also increased, as shown by respiratory disturbances measured during sleep. 2
Among adults ages 30-69, it is estimated that 5.7% of adults have moderate or worse sleep apnea, 58% of those adults have this sleep-disordered breathing due to excess weight. Getting on track with weight loss, can help lessen or even prevent these adult sleep-disordered breathing problems.
